Robot vacuum cleaner have become super popular and the latest tech of self emptying robot vacuums have made them even more popular.
The self emptying robot vacuums use a bag to suck out the dirt from the robot vacuum. These bags hold a lot more than the robot, and eventually need to be emptied.
The robot vacuum manufacturers want you to throw the whole bag away, not only does that get expensive but is wasteful too. You can get many more loads out of the Roomba vacuum bags.
While there are many little tips to modify the bags, I’ve found an even easier way to make your robot vacuum bags reusable.
How To Make Roomba Bags Reusable
Once the robot vacuum bag gets full, do the following:
- Remove bag from base station.
- Take bag outside.
- Use shop vacuum to suck out the dirt inside the bag.
It’s that simple.
No need to cut open the bag or make adjustments to the bag that can make it dust collecting abilities worse, just suck it back out the bag.
The hole of the vacuum bag is small, so it’s hard to get the dirt out, but hook a shop vacuum or any vacuum with a hose up to the hole, and it will suck it back out.
If the dust and dirt were able to go in the hole the first time they’ll go back out again, especially when you use a shop vacuum which is stronger. You’ll also suck out more things like allergens stuck to the fibers of the bag and make the bag keep it’s filtering abilities strong.
This works great as it will work better to get all the dust out than any other method you find online.
Other Ways To Reuse Roomba Vacuum Bags
There are many others online that show you how to make your robot vacuum bags reusable.
This video below takes a new bag and adds Velcro to it to make it easy to split open.
The Velcro idea is a good one, but requires a new bag and modifying it.
Buy Reusable Roomba Bags
You can also buy reusable Roomba bags, instead of making non-reusable bags into reusable ones.
Many of these reusable Roomba bags will have a zipper and work the best if you want to save money on bags. These bags do wear out over time, but they last so much longer than what is shipped with the Robot.
You can get reusable Roomba bags here: 6 Pack Reusable Vacuum Bags Compatible with iRobot Roomba i & s & j Series, i7, i7+, i7Plus, i3, i3+, i4, i4+, i6, i6+, i6Plus, j7, j7+, i8, i8+, s9, s9+, s9Plus, Vacuum Replacement Bags for iRobot Roomba Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal (Amazon Link Ad)
How To Get Affordable Roomba Bags?
The last option is not a reuse option, but the reason why people want to reuse the Roomba bags is because they’re expensive.
You don’t have to buy the Roomba brand bags, you can buy aftermarket options that work just fine and at a better price point.
Here is one example: 16 Pack Vacuum Bags Automatic Dirt Disposal Bags Compatible with iRobot Roomba i & s &j Series i (7150) i7+ i7 Plus (7550) i3+(3550) i6+ (6550) i8+(8550) s9 (9150) s9 Plus (9550 955020) j7+(7550) Bag (Amazon Link Ad)
How Long Do Roomba Bags Last?
Roomba says you can get 30 runs out of your self-emptying robot vacuum, but many owners are getting over 50 with no issue.
If you run your robot vacuum every day, you can easily go 2 months before emptying your Roomba bag.
Making the Roomba bags reusable could easily get you 4 to 6 months before needing a new bag, so you can see the money saving benefits.
Do Reusable Bags Work As Good?
If you reuse the Roomba bags that are not made to be reused, they will not be as good as the original, but they’ll be good enough.
The vacuum bags that are used are very high quality and give you several more runs.
The problems you may run into is odor when you reuse the bags. As the bags get older they can’t stop the odors from escaping, so if you’re sensitive to smells, reusing the bags is not ideal.
If you also suffer from allergies, then reusing the bags is a no-go. As the bags get older, the allergens will escape more often and back into the air, which is not what you want.
Can You Wash Roomba Bags?
The vacuum bags for Roomba’s are not washable and should not be placed in your washing machine.
Getting the bag wet will destroy it and your robot vacuum.
