It’s the questions that trouble many homeowners – is vacuuming better than mopping? Can you vacuum instead of mopping?
The answer, quite simply, is yes.
Vacuum cleaners do a much better job at removing dirt and debris from floors than mopping, especially if your floor has grout lines or uneven surfaces. Mopping is messier and dirtier, but does serve a purpose that we go over later.
Can You Vacuum Instead Of Mopping?
You can vacuum instead of mopping, as vacuuming is more effective at removing dirt and debris from your floors, and it’s also easier and quicker.
If you have hard floors, you should vacuum them regularly – at least once a week. If you have pets or live in a dusty or dirty area, you may need to vacuum more often.
Mopping is a more involved chore that many don’t like to do, and you don’t need to do as much as you think. A vacuum cleaner will be fine, if not better in many instances, then mopping.
Is Mopping Or Vacuuming More Effective At Cleaning?
Vacuuming is more effective than mopping, especially if your floor has cracks or uneven surfaces.
Mopping only pushes dirt around while a vacuum removes it.
Mopping also requires water, and you end up cleaning with the same dirty water. Unless you’re constantly changing out the water, which most people don’t.
Mopping also requires you to let the floor dry, as it’s slippery, or you don’t want to make a new mess. With vacuuming you can walk right after as there is no dry time.
While mopping is not perfect, it’s still needed as the last step of cleaning hard floors if you want a perfect clean, or to protect your floors.
A Mopping Replacement?
Mopping is a chore that many don’t like to do, but there is a solution.
Get a mopping robot (Amazon Link Ad), they even make some as mopping robot vacuum cleaners too!
The downside to these mopping robots is that you can’t add cleaning chemicals to them, only clean water. So they only clean with water, which is perfect for certain floors that are picky. The wrong chemical could stain the floors, so water is a good middle ground.
Should You Always Vacuum Before Mopping?
You should always vacuum before mopping!
This will help remove any loose dirt and debris before you start mopping, and make the job easier.
Mopping before you vacuum will only make things worse and may even scratch your floors depending on what’s on them. You should always use a clean mopping head too, a dirty or damaged one will not clean floors.
Is It OK to Vacuum Tile Floors?
It is okay to vacuum tile floors and is one of the best ways to clean tile floors.
In fact, it’s a good idea to vacuum them regularly – at least once a week.
When it comes to tile, it’s the chemical cleaners that you need to worry about, as some tile can discolor if you used the wrong cleaner. Natural stone is one tile that is picky, but porcelain tile tends to be more durable.
If you’re worried, get a vacuum cleaner that has the ability to turn off the spinning beater brush (beater bar) and only use suction. The beater brush is only needed for carpets anyway.
Is It Better to Sweep or Vacuum?
Sweeping is not as effective as vacuuming, and can actually push dirt and debris around on your floor.
Vacuuming is the best way to remove dirt and debris from your floors.
My biggest gripe with sweeping is that you can never get that last little line of dirty when scooping into the dustpan. This is never an issue with vacuum cleaners and why I will always go for them instead of a broom.
Even if you have a little stick vacuum cleaner that you keep on the ready in the kitchen or nearby is worth it over a broom.
When Should You Mop?
Even though vacuuming is better than mopping, mopping is still necessary. Mopping is needed as the last step of cleaning hard floors if you want a perfect clean or further protect your floors.
Many floor cleaners for mops will help to protect your floors, and it’s natural protective layer. You need to make sure you get the right floor cleaner, if it works for hardwood it may not work for tile or natural stone floors.
A mop is also needed for wet messes, unless you have a shop vacuum, which everyone should. You should not be cleaning wet messes with your regular vacuum cleaner, a shop vacuum or a mop should be used.
