The stairs seem to get the dirtiest out of all the carpet in the home. They take the most abuse with everyone running up and down them usually in the same spots over and over again.
With this much use, the staircase can get filthy, even more so if it has carpet. You can try to vacuum it all the time, but the fact is that it still will get super dirty anyways.
With the correct Carpet Cleaner, the stairs can be cleaned very easily. But we’re not going to stop there; we have several tips and tricks that you can use to clean the carpeted stairs of your home. The Carpet Cleaner is the best method, but not the only method!
Best Carpet Cleaner For Stairs
Let’s get to the point. We consider the Bissell SpotClean Professional Portable Carpet Cleaner to be the best carpet cleaner for stairs that we could find.
When picking a carpet cleaner you have many options, but honestly, it gets confusing. I’m never a fan of the big bulky carpet cleaners because of that; they’re too big.
The big cleaners are hard to take up the stairs or even use on the stairs. In all honestly, if you need something that big then just rent a machine from your local hardware store.
Something like the Bissell SpotClean is small and perfect for all the random messes. This smallness is key for cleaning stairs. Trust me you don’t want to be lugging out a heavy machine for simple spills or even cleaning the carpet of the staircase.
Plus, the SpotClean can be used on other items like upholstery all the way to when the dog pukes on the floor. It’s nice to have a machine that can do so much and is easy to carry around.
I do like how it has the 6-inch stair tool which makes cleaning the stairs faster and easier.
The Negative: The only thing I wish this carpet cleaner did was to have rotating brushes, but it doesn’t. You still have brushes that you can use to scrub the carpet. Not really a big deal when you have the correct carpet cleaning chemicals being used, but something to point out.
A clever little trick if you have just a few spots on the stairs.
- Soak a large cloth rag with warm water that has a little bit of Dawn Detergent and Vinegar.
- Wring out the cloth rag.
- Place the Rag over the dirty spot.
- Place a warm Clothes Iron over the rag.
- Gently moves the iron back and forth, don’t leave it on the cloth for too long.
- The spot should start to lift up and onto the rag.
- Be careful as the rag will get warm too.
The reason why this works so well is the Vinegar helps to break down some of the nasty stuff while the Dawn is a degreaser and will start to attack the dirty stuff. The water mixes the two to give a great cleaner, and the heat of iron helps to lift the stain up.
This is why Steam Cleaners are so effective. In fact, if you have a steam function on your clothing iron then give the stain a little steam spray. Not too much as you don’t want to saturate the carpet. Then place the cleaning rag with the iron over that to lift the stain up.
Good Ole Scrubber
It’s a fact of life. You’re going to be scrubbing the carpet on your stairs for as long as you have carpet on your stairs. You never want to remove the carpet as it works well to dampen the noise of going up and down the stairs.
With this fact of life, I’ve come to the conclusion I just need to buy the right tools for cleaning my carpets. I have a Carpet Cleaner, and it works well, but sometimes I like to go all out.
What I did was buy a long handle scrub brush like this one here so that I don’t break my back scrubbing the carpet on the stairs. Trust me it’s worth it.
Of course get the spray bottles and such, but for the cleaner, I like to use Simple Green. I use it for just about anything, and I find it better than the vinegar or baking soda that everyone loves to talk about on the internet. The only problem is that it can’t be used on every surface, but Simple Green does have an excellent guide to using it on carpets Here.
Simple Green does make a Carpet Cleaner Concentrate that you can get here. It would be better to use this instead of the typical green color cleaner to avoid turning carpets odd colors.
I go heavy on the water and add a little bit of Simple Green to my spray bottle. I then spray the staircase down, no need to get it too wet. I take my scrub brush and scrub the staircase till it looks clean. I then take a rag with Vinegar and water in it and clean the area well to make sure I get all the Simple Green out of the Carpet. I then take a shop vacuum and suck it all up or use the carpet cleaner. I found this to work well for me and my carpet, but it doesn’t always work for all carpet and surfaces so makes sure to check it before doing it. If anything test a small area before using ANY cleaner.
